The Signal House project is in its final stages of restoration! Once complete the new exhibit will move in and our goal is to open to the public in early summer. This has been an exciting project, one which has allowed us to preserve and utilize an existing building on the property. The Signal House can be dated back to 1914, this information was gained from maps of the area. It is thought that it once housed an administrative railroad office until it was later turned in to a storage building. To preserve the building UCHS, with the help of Eastern Oregon Business Source, was able to fundraise over $60,000 that was earmarked solely for the Signal House project. Contributions came from various sources $12,000 alone was community contributions. It was clear this was a project the community believed in as well. Three local businesses donated to the project $5000 from both Hill Meat and CHI St. Anthony, and $3000from Umatilla Electric Cooperative. UCHS also applied for grants with the help of Eastern Oregon Business Source and received approval for all. Those grants came from Umatilla County Economic and Community Development ($10,000), Pendleton Foundation Trust ($10,000), and the Wildhorse Foundation ($15,000). Construction began on the Signal House Last Summer and is due to end this summer. In one year much as been achieved. We are very excited for the public to see the restoration and experience the World War II Exhibit.
